Give it a Tri

Before the Olympics you'd probably never heard of them, but the Brownlee brothers have now become a bit of a household name.   In August 2012, Alistair Brownlee made sporting history by becoming the first Brit to win gold in what is now the UK's fastest growing mass participation sports; Triathlon.

So what is a triathlon?  Simply put, Triathlon is the combination of swimming, cycling and running - normally in that order and including the time you take to "transition" from one discipline to the next. A common misconception is that triathlon is a sport for the super fit, not true!  If you enjoy a challenge, pushing yourself and want to add some variety to your exercise regime, then triathlon could be for you.  Short distance events start with the Super sprint (400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run), through the distances that Olympic athletes compete over (1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run) and for the real endurance enthusiasts there is always  the Ironman distance (3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run).  Other combinations include the Duathlon (run, cycle, run) and the Aquathlon (swim & run - sometimes with a second swim to finish with).

Whatever your age, triathlon is a great, fun sport that provides an all round workout, and provides interesting challenges through developing new skills and specific fitness, so why not give it a tri?   Brighton Tri Club is a new club that aims to put triathlon on the Brighton map.   If you have a reasonable level of fitness, want to train in and learn about Triathlon and fancy the challenge, we could be the club for you.

Our aim is to develop triathlon in Brighton and make it accessible for people at all levels of ability.  We have a wealth of triathlon experience, a number of qualified coaches and dedicated training sessions.  On Tuesday nights we have a coached running session on Hove seafront, on Thursday nights we have a swim session at Brighton College and on Saturday mornings we have a group ride around the quiet lanes and roads of the South Downs.  During the summer, if it ever arrives, we will have open water sea swims, off road running sessions and evening cycle rides.
