Hollingbury Park Avenue Street Party

It wasn't exactly a hot midsummer's day, but the 6th street party was still declared a success.

The 60s and 70s theme captured the imagination and lots of residents dressed up. There was a varied selection of musicians, from street residents Whiplash, Conrad and friends and the Accabellas (right). All were really entertaining and made us realise the local talents we have.
Mr Tickle, the children's entertainer, captivated the younger children for well over an hour, allowing the parents to relax and enjoy themselves whilst indulging in delicious treats from the café.
A highlight of the day was the presence of the food stall from ‘Birdcage Walk', our new local restaurant. They put on a superb barbecue and a range of other lovely dishes from their menu. We were delighted that they were able to do this so soon after their opening and we welcome them as part of our community.
The flower arranging, cake-making and garden sculpture competitions produced some amazing creations. The winning entries were a flower Dougal, and a Burning Bras installation. The cake competition was very hard to judge as all the entries were so gorgeous, but a good excuse to eat a lot of cake! The fancy dress was by far the most popular, but after much deliberation the adult winners were declared, best described as ‘John and Yoko meets Bootsy Collins'.
We decided that as we had little sponsorship this year, there would be a more traditional style to the day and that if we made any money it would be a bonus. The collection failed to raise as much money as we expected and the day ran at a small financial loss. However we all agreed that it was fun and we proved that it was possible to put it on with a shoestring budget, unlike the Hanover Festival and Kemptown Carnival which have had to be withdrawn due to lack of funds.
A huge thank you to the local businesses for donating raffle prizes: Richard Lemon Photographic Studio, James Hull Associates Dental Care, the Dome, Eleventh Flower, the Co-op, Sole Sister, Fiveways Fruits, Sticky Fingers
Special thanks to organisers Jane, Lucy, Conrad, Jo, Vikki, Pete and Fanny
