Downs Junior School 1940s Fair

Saturday 23rd June 1.00pm - 4.00pm

The Summer Fair at Downs Junior School looks set to be extra special, it's 'All hands on deck' to finish the first stage in the renovation of our original WW2 Air raid shelters. We hope to have the Grand Opening of our shelters on the day of the fair - hence our inspired vintage theme of 1940's! Visitors are encouraged to dress up for the occasion, but if you don't have anything to wear don't worry as there will be a 'pop up' 1940's photo booth, complete with fake moustaches and hair rollers, for you to dress up and have your photo taken.

We will also have an amazing display by The Ragroof Theatre Company who will be doing dance demo's of the era. There will be stalls galore with a retro twist like: Guess the weight of the ration box, 'Slam the Spam' tin can alley, a Homefront stall where you can get your very own rations such as 'Chocs away' chocolate bars and 'Dig for Victory' seed packets, there will be an old fashioned sweet stall, and our lovely local Women's Institute ladies will be on hand to offer thrifty tips.

And if all that vintage stuff just isn't your bag, don't worry there will still be all your Fair Favourites, you can even win a goldfish in a bag! (a plastic one I might add) We will also have some 'Austerity' type sports games, a barbecue, ice-creams and cream teas with lashings of cream and jam!

The whole event will transport you back in time to WW2, we hope to have regular tours of the Air Raid shelter throughout the day for visitors wishing to experience what life was like during the war, complete with 1940's toilets! The air raid shelters project has been many years in the making and Friends of Downs Junior School parents association, have funded this first stage of the underground museum. The Fair is a fund-raiser for the second stage of development, for displays of WW2 objects, narrative panels and AV equipment showing footage of the time. If you have any WW2 memorabilia or any photos of yourself at Downs Junior School during the war that you wish to donate to the shelters we would be extremely grateful, any donated items can be brought to the school office on Rugby road, thank you.

We hope you can join us on Saturday 23rd June for a great family day out and a trip down memory lane.
